Beyond labs: Tudor Lodge expands its Asterix partnership

Beyond labs: Tudor Lodge expands its Asterix partnership

Tudor Lodge Health Centre piloted Asterix’s abnormal labs service for one month in November 2025. Nearly a year later, Asterix GPs now handle the majority of the practice's test results, run same-day acute consultations, and are taking on clinical letter management from November. In the video below, the practice team explains how it came about.

Asterix Case Study: Tudor Lodge Health Centre (4:37)

At a Glance

  • Practice: Tudor Lodge Health Centre, South West London
  • Practice size: 11,000 patients, three partners, training practice
  • CQC rating: Good
  • Services with Asterix: lab results and patient callbacks (since November 2025), remote acute consultations (since April 2026), clinical document management (from November 2026)
  • Key results: 5–6 GP sessions back every week across lab results, patient callbacks, and remote acute consultations; an average 30–40% saving against in-house GP delivery; lab results actioned within 24 hours; remote acute consultations delivered same-day.

Where It Started

Like a lot of practices, Tudor Lodge has more patients than its building was designed for, and lab results were taking up a large share of GP time. The practice receives about 2,200 results a month. Practice Manager Crystal Short says the volume was only part of the problem. It was also hard to keep track of which result belonged to which clinician when locums, sickness, and annual leave kept changing who was in.

Managing Partner Prash Thurairatnam saw the cost on his team:

Our doctors were working long days. Sometimes they would have to come before the start of their shift, and a lot of the time they were completing way beyond the end of their shift… and worst case over the weekends.

The partnership began with an Asterix productivity analysis. It showed that abnormal results and callbacks were using about four GP sessions a week. Asterix then ran a focused one-month pilot on that workstream, which we wrote about in March.

Remote, vetted GMC-registered GPs owned the work from start to finish. Work was audited while quality was being proven, and coverage rose in phases:

We started out with 30% of our labs being dealt with by Asterix, which gave the opportunity for the GPs to feed back what was working, what wasn't working… and then we ramped up to 90–95%, and now they're covering all of them.
— Crystal Short, Practice Manager

Expanding Beyond Labs

The expanded support is a core benefit of working with Asterix: each surgery gets a minimum of two vetted, remote GPs trained to the practice’s bespoke SOP and local guidance. Our GPs get to know the practice team and become embedded in its daily operations. This makes it simple for those GPs to continue supporting the surgery in other workstreams.

At Tudor Lodge Health Centre, the service expanded intentionally over 12 months.

Acute consultations, live since April 2026. When the test results work was stable, the practice and Asterix wrote a second SOP for remote acute consultations. Patients send requests through Tudor Lodge's total triage system between 8am and 6:30pm. Suitable requests go into a dedicated Asterix remote consultation clinic in EMIS.

Patients can now be seen the same day for a pre-agreed list of dispositions instead of waiting several days. Every patient gets their care plan by text message afterwards.

The patients love it. They're having acute consultations with Asterix doctors in a timely manner. They're able to get their results, discuss them, discuss the treatment plan… and the Asterix doctors will send them text messages with all the information that they need. So it just feels really complete.
— Crystal Short, Practice Manager

Clinical letters, from November 2026. Tudor Lodge has signed up for document management as the third workstream. The Asterix Team will read, code and action all incoming clinical correspondence. Asterix GPs manage clinical letters including medication changes and referrals. Anything that needs a partner's decision goes back to the practice with clear instructions. For the Tudor Lodge Management Team, it came down to continuity:

It was a no-brainer for us to add document management into the portfolio of services we currently have with Asterix, mainly because they utilise the same workforce who already deliver lab results and acute consultations for us.
— Prash Thurairatnam, Managing Partner

All three workstreams use the same approach. Asterix GPs work to Tudor Lodge's local guidelines and SOPs and regularly attend clinical and governance meetings. Each one works with no more than two practices, so patients see the same names in their record.

Asterix GPs are an extension of our GP team… They are working at a similar standard to what we are, using our local guidelines and our national guidelines to deliver care safely and effectively.
— Dr Smitha Thurairatnam, GP Partner

The Results

Nine months in, the practice reports:

  • 5–6 GP sessions back every week, which now go towards triage demand up to 6:30pm and more proactive care
  • 30–40% average saving against employing in-house GPs, with care still delivered by GMC-registered GPs through a CQC-registered provider
  • Up to 95% of test results actioned within 24 hours, often sooner.
  • Fewer calls to reception asking for results callbacks, and no more GPs catching up on results in the evenings and at weekends
I would absolutely recommend Asterix to any other GP practice. They've turned things around for us at Tudor Lodge. Workflow is so much more efficient, safer for patients, much improved wellbeing of GPs, and all in all, a happier patient and staff group.
— Dr Aravinden Ratnakumar, Salaried GP

What Made It Work

Prove one workstream, then expand intentionally. Tudor Lodge added acute consultations only once test results were stable, and documents only once acute consultations were running. Each new service had its own SOP and started from a working relationship the practice already trusted.

One GP team across every workstream. The GPs who file Tudor Lodge's results also run its acute clinic and will handle its documents. That means no new supplier to onboard, no new faces in the record, and local knowledge that carries over.

Governance you can see. Asterix regularly audits its GPs and reports back to the practice. When something falls short, the practice gets a written summary or a meeting to go through it.

Asterix has a very robust governance process in play, whereby they audit their GPs every week… that's really reassuring from a management team perspective.
— Prash Thurairatnam, Managing Partner

What's Next for Tudor Lodge

Document management goes live in November and will be run by the same Asterix doctors already working on labs and acute consultations. Prash's advice to other practices is simple:

What I would say to any GP practice that can reflect and understand the similar struggles that we had at Tudor Lodge, particularly around estate, costs and workforce… reach out to Asterix, inquire about their productivity analysis tool, and you won't regret it.
— Prash Thurairatnam, Managing Partner
